The freeing of the slaves was poorly managed leaving many freed slaves homeless and destitute. Poor Whites struggled to find work against a backdrop of a recession caused in no small part by Thomas Jefferson trade embargo against the British. Add to the mix British loyalists quiet since the Revolutionary War, the short-lived Republic of West Texas, the 1812 War, the defeat of Napoleon and the New England States pushing for secession and you have an adventure that involves the intrigue of top-level politics of the day. Did I mention the duplicitous Governor of Georgia!
